Tycho Manson was called to the Ontario bar in 1996. Before joining
Chernos Flaherty Svonkin
LLP in 2014, Tycho, who is a former journalist, spent more than six years as in-house counsel at
one of Canada’s largest media companies, specializing in libel litigation, employment litigation
and pre-publication advice, and advising on matters ranging from intellectual property issues to
commercial disputes. Before that, Tycho spent more than eleven years at two of Canada’s
largest law firms, where his work ranged from complex commercial matters to media law,
environmental law, and tax litigation. Tycho has appeared at all levels of Ontario courts as well
as the Supreme Court of Canada, and the Federal Court. Tycho also has experience in medical
negligence litigation, inquests and professional discipline proceedings.

Tycho has acted on cases that include:
- numerous defamation actions and threats against newspapers and broadcasters
- online defamation claims for both plaintiffs and defendants
- litigation arising from disputes over the application of earn-out provisions in corporate
acquisition agreements
- several large litigation matters arising from a dispute over the revenues of a First Nations
casino
- acting for the Canadian Civil Liberties Association on Little Sisters and R. v. Sharpe, two
major freedom of expression cases at the Supreme Court of Canada
- an arbitration for a major book retailer in connection with its rights to return inventory to
publishers
- multiparty litigation involving liability for environmental contamination at a number of service-station sites
- a complex jurisdiction motion in a dispute arising from a commercial agreement in China
